Vowel Lab III: Vowel Classification

چکیده

Classification is ubiquitous. The ability to recognize and categorize things based on their features is fundamental to human cognition; a large part of our ability to understand and deal with the world around us is a result of our ability to classify things. Similarly, we want to design systems that are capable of recognition and categorization. We want vending machines to be able to recognize the bills inserted into the bill changer. We want internet search engines to classify web pages based on their relevance to our query. We want computers that can recognize and classify speech properly so that we can interact with them naturally. We want medical systems that can classify unusual regions of an x-ray as cancerous or benign. We want high speed digital communication modems that can determine the sequence of, say, 64-ary signals that were transmitted. There is a vast array of applications for classification. In this lab, we will build upon the foundation that we developed in Lab 8 to actually perform classification of vowel sounds. We will explore a couple of ways of measuring the performance of a classifier (i.e., a system that performs classification), and we will relate these performance measures back to the ones that we introduced in Lab 8 for characterizing different feature sets.

The Effect of English Vowel-Recognition Training on Beginner and Advanced Iranian ESL Learners

This study was an attempt to investigate the effect of vowel-recognition training on beginner and advanced Iranian ESL learners. A total of 36 adult Iranian ESL learners (18 advanced and 18 beginners) who were students of various majors at Memorial University (MUN) were recruited for the study. Advanced participants had the experience of living in Canada for at least three years while beginners...

Vowel Lab II: Vowel Features

In Lab #7, we looked at designing low-order digital filters to model human vowel production. Why is this a useful technique? We argued that such models were useful for studying speech production and the like. However, there are more practical, applied reasons for doing this. Suppose that we want to perform speech recognition and determine which vowel is being said. A system would be hard presse...

Assimilation of Final Low Back Vowel in Eghlidian Dialect

In this article, the low back vowel /A/ in word-final positions in Eghlidian dialect, one of Persian dialects, is studied. This vowel is represented phonetically as [A], [o] and [@] in different phonetic environments. Therefore many words were collected via interviewing ten native speakers so that these different alternant forms can be accounted for appropriately. Since one of the authors of th...

Acoustic Analysis of Persian EFL Learners' Pronunciation of English Vowels

This paper reports the results of an experimental study on non-native production of English vowels. Two groups of Persian EFL learners varying in language proficiency were tested on their ability to produce the nine plain vowels of American English. Vowel production accuracy was assessed by means of acoustic measurements. Ladefoged and Maddison’s (1996) F1 F2 measurements for American English v...

Effect of Vowel Auditory Training on the Speech-In-Noise Perception among Older Adults with Normal Hearing

Introduction: Aging reduces the ability to understand speech in noise. Hearing rehabilitation is one of the ways to help older people communicate effectively. This study aimed to investigate the effect of vowel auditory training on the improvement of speech-in-noise (SIN) perception among elderly listeners.   Materials and Methods: This study was conducted on 36 elderly ...
